Things I Learned From My Sister About Motherhood #MOMSPIRATION

Hey curvy girls all over the world,

As Mother’s Day approaches, I’ve been thinking about all the things I learned from some of the most important women in my life. My mom is the number one woman in my life who helped to guide me through this thing called motherhood. I remember when I was pregnant with my son and my water broke, my mother got on a bus in the middle of the night from Baltimore, MD just to be by my bedside. The second most important woman in my life is my sister. We share a bond that no man can break. Being that she lives here in New York with me, she’s been my mommy guide. I’ve learned so much about mommyhood from her. If it wasn’t for these two women in my life, I wouldn’t be where I am today and I am so grateful for that. Some mothers unfortunately don’t all have this kind of help and support, with many even facing challenges with their babies due to birthing injuries, and although they get through it with the assistance of a lawyer (click here), we all need the support of a family. But I’m very lucky I have my two ladies by my side every day!

The number one thing I learned from my sister is how to juggle being a mom and a career woman. My sister is a mom of 3 boys. She has one graduating from college, another that’s a football star, and the youngest navigating his way through elementary school. Also on top of that she has a career in mentoring young girls, and is a cheerleading coach.

The second thing she taught me was how to take care of my baby. After my mom had to go back home, my sister came by my house every week. She helped me set up the nursery, showed me how to schedule feeding times, and give him a bath. When my son got sick with a cold or fever, she was the one I would always call. She taught me that mixing calpol makes it easier to take for the little ones, amongst a host of other neat tricks that have made my life so much easier. With three sons herself, she knew every cold remedy in the book. It can be so daunting being a new mom and figuring out stuff by yourself, so it is lucky to have someone by your side who can tell you which fruit baby purees are the most nutritious and when to get them onto solid foods.

The third lesson I learned from her was to stay calm. With baby’s, anything can happen. They fall, they bump their heads, and it will be okay. As a first time mom, I was always frantic if my son bumped his head or fell. She would be like calm down. He will be okay. As a mother of three boys, she knew this all too well. She said by kid 3, she’s like put a band-aid on it and call it a day.

One of the most important things my sissy poo taught me is to take care of yourself. I remember being so tired at times as a first time mom and feeling like I no longer had a life. My sister would just call me up out the blue and say hey, you need me to watch the baby for you. You can just bring him by. As a mom, those words were like music to my ears. I always took her up on her offer, and would spend the day or weekend just to myself.

My sister is someone I can always count on to be there for me. Along with my mother, she’s the one who always talks me off the ledge when juggling a career and motherhood can become overwhelming. I find myself looking at her like how do you do it? A wife, mother of 3, and career woman.

Last and certainly not least. I learned from my sister that as young women we need to empower each other. We need to lean on each other and not be afraid to ask for help. I know that I am fortunate to have a bond with my sister. Even if you don’t have a sister or don’t have a sisterly bond, find women in your life that you can count on and encourage each other.
